Born in Romania in 1912, conductor Sergiu Celibidache was a genius of sound, which he mixed and balanced from within the music itself. He had a profound knowledge of instrumental frequencies and acoustics. The few recordings made with him date back to the 1950s, so perhaps it seems all the more paradoxical that he gave his consent for his concerts to be broadcast on radio, for them to be filmed and archived, and for video recordings to be made during rehearsals. This documentation shows the great care Celibidache took in the tonal balance of the orchestra, which resulted in an unforced sound quality. This excellent quality was determined by the relationship between the individual instruments, exact phrasing and tone, and a real mastery of dynamics and timbre.
