Deutsche Grammophon presents a limited 3-LP edition of Rafael Kubelík's celebrated Schumann symphony cycle, remastered from the original analog sources and pressed on 180-g vinyl. His first two Schumann recordings marked the beginning of the collaboration between Rafael Kubelík and Deutsche Grammophon in 1963. It is a testament to Kubelík's human as well as musical qualities that he was able to establish a close relationship with the Berliner Philharmoniker in a very short time. This Schumann cycle is a revelation. Kubelík shows that the composer's much-maligned orchestration can work with a certain ease, and that these scores need not sound turgid and edgy. He brings a spring-like freshness and vitality to the music, driving it forward with beautifully matched tempos while revealing its poetic sonority, joy and nobility. The Berlin Philharmonic responds with enthusiasm and inspired joy in playing. No wonder these exemplary recordings have held their place against all subsequent new recordings.
